Abogado estadounidense y asesor jurídico de la Casa Blanca. En 1965 se tituló de abogado en la Universidad de Georgetown y en 1970 el pdte. Richard Nixon lo nombró abogado de la Casa Blanca. En 1972 Nixon le encargó investigar si funcionarios de la Casa Blanca habían participado en la irrupción en el Hotel Watergate (ver escándalo de Watergate). Se negó a emitir un informe ficticio que se le propuso para negar que se hubiera encubierto la operación. Como los indicios de la participación de la Casa Blanca se acrecentaron, comenzó a revelar a los investigadores federales lo que sabía. Nixon lo despidió en abril de 1973; dos meses más tarde, prestaba declaración ante un comité del senado sobre la obstrucción a la justicia cometida por funcionarios de la Casa Blanca, incluido el presidente. Pasó cuatro meses en la cárcel por su participación en el encubrimiento de Watergate. Sus revelaciones contribuyeron a que Nixon decidiera renunciar en 1974.
